Community Insights: Good Ideas Worth Knowing About

If you're looking for a way to give back, these organizations are doing amazing work across our community.

Buddies & Co. is a specialty drink and snack shop in Brandon employing people of all abilities. Its mission is to provide a place where people with disabilities are valued, find meaningful work, and connect with the community they love.

This nonprofit is currently raising funds for business startup costs, including building modifications to ensure accessibility, equipment purchases, and ongoing operational expenses.

Falls Area Single Track (FAST) is a nonprofit with a mission to protect, create, and enhance quality trail experiences for mountain bikers in cooperation with other trail users in the Sioux Falls area.

The organization is seeking funds to support the development of 13 miles of recreational trails at Great Bear for hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers of all skill levels through shared-use and bike-optimized trails. The project will introduce progressive bike and hiking experiences, foster skill development, and create more recreation opportunities within the city of Sioux Falls.

Family Visitation Center exists to empower children to maintain healthy relationships with their family members through safe supervised visits and exchanges. This organization serves children from birth through age 18 who have been caught in the middle of complicated family dynamics including divorce, domestic violence, mental illness, and substance abuse.

To provide maximum safety for children, and a complete and accurate record of interactions during visits, funding is needed to replace their current video recording equipment.

Midwest Street Medicine is focused on improving the health of vulnerable populations, starting with those experiencing homelessness in Sioux Falls. Its mission is to close the gaps in health outcomes and mortality by offering low-barrier care that addresses each individual’s medical, behavioral, addiction, and social needs. Every weekend, a team of multi-disciplinary volunteers from various healthcare and related backgrounds provide medical treatment and assistance to folks in the downtown corridor.

Owen's Outfitters, a program of The Legacy Foundation, is a medical equipment lending library. Its mission is to provide durable and disposable medical equipment those who need it most, at no charge. Since founding the project in October 2023, Owen’s Outfitters has provided approximately 1,200 pieces of equipment and medical supplies to individuals and families, sourced through community donations.

Located on a two-acre property in northwest Sioux Falls, Veterans Community Project is a specialized community of 25 tiny homes with on-site, wraparound support services designed to equip unhoused veterans with the tools needed to return to a stable, prosperous, and independent life. Each tiny house provides everything a veteran needs to live with dignity and security: new furniture, appliances, housewares, bedding, personal items, and utilities — all free of charge.
