SculptureWalk adds a stop at Community Foundation

We have a new guest at our historic Depot.

Well, it’s a few new guests – a trio of magpies, sculpted in bronze, wings flapping, beaks open and tipped to the sky, vibrant and alive, one looking away, sleek and formidable.

“Mischief and Plunder,” a sculpture by artist Ken Newman, recently was installed on the north side of our patio as part of the 2025 SculptureWalk.

We’re new to having an exhibit from the longstanding arts program on our site, but we’ve been long-time supporters of art in Sioux Falls. At the Community Foundation, we know there are so many talented artists and inspiring organizations doing incredible work to make our city more beautiful.

Through performances, installations, shows and workshops, Sioux Falls artists continue to give all of us a window to different worlds, ways of thinking and visions of how life can be.

Newman, in his artist’s statement, says his work is “a show of respect for the simple and subtle rhythms and elements in life as they are in nature.”

Looking at his magpies, you can see that energy – and reflect on how your own daily rhythms, simple meditations and even the “struggles of life,” which he also seeks to capture, compound to create ordinary life.

And what a gift that is. To flap our wings together. To stare, with determination, into the distance. To turn our voices to the sky, knowing we will be heard, knowing we will listen for one another.

This season, we celebrate all the different ways we work together and give together, and the people who care deeply about Sioux Falls and put that care into action through generosity.

Let’s celebrate another season together, reminding one another that the small moments make up the big ones, and that the big ones string themselves together to become our lifetime and our legacy.
