Mel and Marie Duncan Family Endowment gifts $18,250 toward Flandreau recreation facility

A grant through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has helped support construction of a new indoor recreation facility in Flandreau.

The $18,250 grant from the Mel and Marie Duncan Family Endowment, held at the Community Foundation, was awarded earlier this year.

“Our donors are excited to help expand recreation opportunities for the people who call Flandreau home,” said Patrick Gale, Vice President of Community Investment for the Foundation.

The project, called The Warehouse, will be the city’s first indoor recreation and athletic complex and include space for pickleball, basketball, wrestling and gathering. It also will include a community fitness center. The Warehouse is a volunteer-led project of the Flandreau Sports Association. Labor for the project has been donated by local construction companies.

The Mel and Marie Duncan Family Endowment was one of our initial commitments, which helped give us the momentum to move this project forward,” said Bret Severtson, a community member who has helped lead the project. “If it weren’t for that gift and other generous donations, this wouldn’t be possible. It’s all local businesses and organizations, and it’s amazing to see our community come together like this.”

The endowment supports capital investment in the Flandreau community for educational, recreational and historic preservation purposes.
