Joe and Jennifer Kirby give back in ways large and small, visible and private. Their commitment to Sioux Falls is inspirational.
Read MoreThe Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation celebrated a record year of grantmaking, thanks to the generosity of the donors who choose to give through the Foundation, at the 2025 Donor Reception on Oct. 16.
"This past year, we gave out more than $38 million in grants," said Andy Patterson, CEO of the Foundation. "And I mean 'we.' We couldn't do this without all of you who choose to make community giving important."
Patterson went on to emphasize how local nonprofits and causes rely on the steadfast commitment of Sioux Falls donors to help deliver needed services and programs to the community. The Community Foundation has given out more than $350 million since it began more than 40 years ago.
He highlighted several projects and programs from the past year that were funded through the Foundation, including Jacobson Plaza, the bike trail extension from Lien Park, the expansion of the Levitt at the Falls and continuing support for the Helpline Center Network of Care, a database that allows nonprofit service providers to be more collaborative and data-driven in their work.
"We were there when this program was first discussed in 2014, and we were proud to support it then," Patterson said. "We have continued to support the Network of Care, which has shown how important it is when our nonprofits can work together, build trust with one another and help members of our community."
We celebrated our 2025 Donor Reception on Oct. 16, where we honored Joe and Jennifer Kirby as our Friend of the Foundation.
Friend of the Foundation award
Every year, the Community Foundation honors a Friend of the Foundation, which celebrates individuals, families or businesses whose generosity and commitment have shaped Sioux Falls in meaningful ways.
This year, Joe and Jennifer Kirby received the award, presented by Mary Kolsrud, chief philanthropy officer. Kolsrud shared the many ways the Kirbys have given to the community - through rallying others to support causes, board service and generous donations.
"All the incredible projects that bear the Kirby name are just the tip of the iceberg," Kolsrud said. "But what's most meaningful about their giving isn't just the scope, it's the consistency. It's the check sent to a nonprofit, faithfully, year after year. Gifts like that are transformational. That steady support keeps doors open and work moving forward."
In receiving the award, Joe Kirby said they were honored to be among the others who have been recognized.
"Our approach to giving would have been more difficult, if not impossible, without the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. They are wonderful partners for those interested in giving back to this community," Joe said.
Jennifer echoed those sentiments and said the Foundation has become a trusted name in Sioux Falls. She said she is grateful for the guidance she receives as she looks for meaningful projects in the community.
She also recognized that it takes many people coming together to bring any project forward. "Fundraising is a team effort," Jennifer said. "None of these projects would be possible without a small army of volunteers."
Kolsrud said the Kirbys are a perfect example of leading with heart.
"Thank you for everything you've done, and continue to do, for this community."
