Local nonprofits help people, families in need
Imagine having only the clothes on your back.
That’s a scenario more common than you might think, especially for people experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or who have recently been released from prison.
Several nonprofits in the Sioux Falls area seek to help people in those situations, providing much-needed items and services. If you're wondering how to help this winter, here are a few organizations to consider supporting:
Center of Hope
The Center of Hope Care Center provides warm clothing, work wear, job search and counseling help. Clients are able to use center resources to help get back on their feet.
Their Prison Re-Entry Backpack Program provides a backpack of essentials for people recently released from incarceration.
Children's Shelter for Family Safety
Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety helps victims of domestic violence, stalking, elder abuse, sexual assault, child abuse and child neglect.
They provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, prevention and education.
Mercy Nights for winter months
When it's cold out - below 40 degrees - many shelter providers work together to ensure anyone who wants somewhere to stay has a place, including:
- Bishop Dudley Hospitality House
- Union Gospel Mission
- St. Francis House
And for those who still choose to stay outside, Midwest Street Medicine provides winter gear, including blankets, socks, coats, gloves and hats to people in the downtown area.
If you want to give back, consider any of these nonprofits. You can find more at The Giving Depot.
