Community Foundation Awards More Than $400,000 in Scholarships

Graduates in their caps and gowns.

They are the leaders of tomorrow — inspiring young people who are poised to pursue bold pathways thanks in part to meaningful scholarships administered by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

This week, the Community Foundation announced that more than $400,000 in scholarships have been awarded to more than 100 deserving and motivated local students who are pursuing post-secondary education.

The scholarships are “funded by donors who are passionate about investing in the future through the power of education and are administered by the Foundation,” said Patrick Gale, the Community Foundation’s vice president, community investment.

Davenport Evans, a law firm in Sioux Falls, established its scholarship with the Community Foundation more than 30 years ago. Applicants must have high academic achievement and must plan to attend an in-state, accredited four-year college or university.

Vince Roche, a lawyer with Davenport Evans, reflected on the scholarship’s importance in commemoration of its 30th anniversary in 2017.

“The firm recognizes that our best and brightest high school seniors are the future of South Dakota and key to growing our economy,” Roche said. “That’s a primary reason why we are committed to encouraging those students to attend one of our fine in-state institutions of higher learning, with the hope that some of them will ultimately put down roots in a local community.”

The Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith Scholarship continues to be administered by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation today. We caught up with this year’s Davenport Evans scholars to learn about their plans for the future. We’re excited about the energy, enthusiasm and passion of these young people. We hope they inspire you as much as they inspire us.
